Commun Service Center

OF GREATER CLEVELAND

The Center in D.C. Forty-seven Center volunteers, staff members and supporters were in D.C. for the big March. A grant from the local March on Washington chapter assisted in the participation of eleven youth members.

Coordination of youth groups nationwide was handled by the American Friends Service (Quakers) and Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League, D.C.'s youth group.

Paging people persons. The Center's volunteer pool is now nearing 200. Jeff, our beloved volunteer manager, is stretched to the max. The Center needs to expand our volunteer management pool to four (two women, one more man).

If you're good with people and management systems, can give three hours a week Saturday mornings and would love to help the people who make the Center possible, please call 522-1999 to get on board.

Volunteers raise the roof. Along those lines, a little correction from last month's Chronicle editorial. Far from handling Renovation single-handedly, Aubrey is very much indebted to the dozens of volunteers who make the Inner Beauty team happen every Sunday. Carpenters, painters, electricians and just all-purpose beauticians. Without you, we'd be nothing-so a little tribute's called for.

Current biggest Renovation need: carpet layers. We have the carpet. We have the padding. We have the new floors. But we need the experts to help get it down. Help!

Razzes, Inc. Call WMMS (781-9667) and give them grief for bringing in the atrociously homophobic Andrew Dice Clay this month. Cleveland can do better without queerbashing-as-comedy and WMMS should know better.

Federation for Community Planning gets a major demerit for booking the odious Gary Suhaldonik for their annual Institute March 28. Rep. Suhaldonik is known for numerous attempts to legislate bigotry in Ohio and he sure didn't jive with the event's theme this year: "Diversity."

Brava! The Center extends a special welcome to our new Hotline volunteer, Marlene. We've been without lesbian pres-

ence on the line for too many months, and the numerous women coming out who call 781-6736 need to hear a woman's voice.

We still need volunteers of either gender to fill out our schedule, so please call if you'd like to make a commitment here.

Nightstick Dept. The 1993 Cleveland Police rookie class were a stellar bunch April 27 at an awareness presentation by the Maryann Finegan Project training team. The 67 officers were very attentive and interactive, which made for a welcome change from recent training team bookings.

Pat, Erica and Ed-project interns and volunteers are currently overhauling our training with the assistance of Stonewall Columbus to come up with a more effective model.

The Project is currently recruiting volunteers who can make a two-year commitment and have daytime availability to work particularly in the area of law enforcement training.

Boots Scoot Dept. The Cleveland City Country Dancers have relocated to a larger space. The Dancers were a great tenantnot only introducing dozens of new faces to the Center, but also helping out with specific fiscal needs (like Renovation). All the luck in your new home!

Teen Beat. The annual statewide school psychologists conference in Columbus May 5 featured a PRYSM workshop and table for the second time. Assistance from the Columbus youth group was most appreciated.

Sexual minority youth issues have still not been made an integral part of any college curriculum for adolescent counselors in Ohio.

The time is now. If you liked the energy of the March and want to keep the momentum building, you couldn't pick a better time to get involved with the Center. Volunteers behind the scenes and providing services are the backbone of our agency and the true leaders of the fastest-growing lesbian and gay center in the state. Let us show you how you can join the team and make our community even stronger.

This space has been provided to the Center by the Chronicle, and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Chronicle staff or management.
